Gujarat-based Adani Group, RPSG and others looking to acquire new IPL teams 2022

Gujarat-based Adani group, RSPG, Torrent Group and Aurobindo Pharma Ltd. are interested in buying the new IPL teams for the 2022 edition of the tournament

The Board of Cricket for Control (BCCI) has made up its mind on launching 2 new IPL teams for IPL 2022, while the second phase of IPL 2021 is yet to commence in September-October this year. The Adani group based in Gujarat and RSPG Group among other two, have shown interest in buying the new IPL franchises. 

The Indian cricket board in advance preparation for the next year’s tournament, is set to have two more teams on board, totaling to 10 teams instead of 8, for IPL 2022. 

According to a report by Times of India, the tender for the new IPL franchises will be out in August before the final bids open in October. A few major corporates and businesses have shown interest in buying the new teams. 

The report states that Gujarat based- Adani Group, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group based in Kolkata along with Aurobindo Pharma Ltd based in Hyderabad and the Gujarat-based Torrent Group are interested in the acquisition of the new franchises. Once the tender documents are out, there are other firms who might put forth their interest in the franchises.

The board has also planned to bring in new rules for the mega auction that is scheduled for later this year. The franchise will only be allowed to retain 4 players before the auction. They are allowed to keep back maximum of 3 Indian players and 2 overseas players, while those retaining 2 Indian players can retain 2 overseas players. 

The BCCI will also be increasing the salary purse of each franchise from Rs. 85 Cr to Rs. 90 Cr for the mega auction, with each team being mandated towards 75 per cent spending.
