5 important gardening tools you should invest in

Have you just bought your first home and are getting into the world of gardening? Or perhaps this is the first property you’ve lived in with an outdoor space? Whatever your circumstances, there are certain gardening tools that are essential for maintaining a neat and tidy outside oasis. Here, we explore five pieces of equipment that are worth investing in.

  1. Lawnmower

If you have a lawn, one of the most useful pieces of equipment will be a lawnmower. There are many different options to suit all budgets – so the best one for you will really depend on the size of your garden. If you have a large lawn, then a sit-on lawnmower may be worth the investment, whereas if you have a smaller plot a simple push-model may be more cost-effective.

  1. Hose pipe

A hose pipe will come in handy for lots of different tasks around the garden. You may use it to water your grass or other plants, to fill up a watering can, or for any cleaning tasks you have. For example, you may want to attach a pressure washer to clean patio flags, or use it to rinse muddy wellies after a long walk!

  1. Rake

Another essential tool is a rake – which you can use to collect leaves that fall in autumn, as well as any branches, pieces of hedge or other foliage. They are also particularly useful if you’re planting new flowers, bushes or hedges, as they can be used to turn soil, break up large clumps of clay and spread mulch.

  1. Watering can

If you have any potted plants or shrubs sitting around a border in your garden, you’ll need a sturdy watering can to feed and water them. There are many options to explore, each with different capacities, weights and spout lengths. If you have a large garden a big watering can may be ideal, or if you have hard-to-reach plants in hangers, pick one with a long spout.

  1. Trowel and spade/shovel

A high-quality trowel is an essential for any gardener. This hand tool may be small but it’s certainly mighty – and will become your go-to time and time again. Typically, they are used for digging holes when planting, weeding, potting and moving plants around the garden. A large shovel will also come in handy for more intensive work.

No matter how little or large your garden, it’s wise to have a range of high-quality tools that will help you look after it. There are options on the market to suit all budgets, from cheap and cheerful tools to luxury, high-end products. The key is to choose those that best suit you and your garden – after all it may not be wise to spend lots of money on a state-of-the-art lawnmower if you have a very section of grass.

It’s wise to set yourself a budget for all your tools before you start buying. You may also want to look at various finance options if you need to make essential improvements, such as for any existing damage. Once you have all the tools you need, you can get to work making your garden a relaxing retreat perfect for a warm summer’s day.
