The Mirror Cube Puzzle

The Mirror Cube might look a little complex, but it works around a fairly simple concept. It is a cube-shaped puzzle like any other. However, instead of different colours on each side, the mirror cube has different shaped pieces, excluding the centre and reflective stickers of the same colour. Other than the centre no two pieces are of the same shape or height. A lot of trial and error methods are involved in solving this Mirror puzzle. This is because you need to know what you are looking for rather than focus on a particular face or colour.

The Mirror Block is not an official WCA event. However, in 2016 the Word Record Single for a Mirror Solve was 9.57 seconds. Watch the video below as Seppomania speed solves this Mirror Block Puzzle.

2. The Siamese Twisty Puzzles

One of the easiest modifications to a Rubik’s Cube is to bandage it. These are also referred to as Siamese Twisty Puzzles. Bandaging the puzzles restricts the movement of the puzzle, thereby increasing its difficulty. The original Siamese Puzzle was created just a year after the release of the original Rubik’s Cube. Ideal Toy Corporation had initially launched it under the name ‘Rubik’s Mate.’ There is no exact method of solving such a puzzle. This is because each variant has its own set of notations and restrictions on the movements. The solution is for you to discover through trial and error.

3. Sticker Mods (Modifications)

Stickers play a crucial role in a Rubik’s Cube as it helps in identifying the solved state of the puzzle. However, the same old colours might seem boring to some cubers who are always looking out for new challenges. There are many sticker modifications of the 5×5 Rubik’s Cube like the Sudoku, Maze, Rainbow, Corner Twist, Calendar, etc. All of these bring a new twist to the classic game. The solution to solving such stickers and picture cube is to first figure out the correct position of the pieces. The only differentiating factor is that in some cases you should realign the centrepieces to match them to the edges. However, some brands might even add a logo on one of the centre faces. But that is not really helpful since you should be able to look at the bigger picture.

Conclusion

Over the years many designers and creators have aimed at designing variants of the 5×5 Cube. These are a highly challenging and great way to level up your Cube solving skills. Though there might not be plenty of tutorials or guides to help you solve these variants, once you understand the basics of solving the classic 5×5, you can easily solve the other variants as they almost work around the same mechanism.
