Looking for the Best Inverter Battery for Home? Use This Checklist

Your inverter’s battery is one of the most important parts of your home inverter, and therefore, you need to make sure that you buy the best inverter battery for your home. Most people, however, buy a battery based on the price of the battery. Some buy a cheap one just because it helps them save money while there are some who buy an expensive one assuming that it is the best inverter battery for home. This, however, is not the right approach. So, in this post we have listed a few points that you must check before you buy a battery for your home. Let’s see what they are.

1. Battery Capacity

Simply put, battery capacity gives you an idea of the power backup that an inverter battery can provide during a power cut. Higher the battery capacity, more the power back up it can provide.

If you want to find out the right battery capacity, use the below-mentioned formula.

Battery capacity = (load requirement * backup-time * aging factor) / (battery voltage*battery efficiency*inverter efficiency)

The following values are constant

Inverter aging factor = 1.25

Battery efficiency = 0.8

Inverter efficiency = 0.8

Battery voltage  = 12V (in most cases)

Let us assume the Required Backup = 2hrs

Calculating the load requirement

Let’s say you need to run the following appliances during a power cut.

  • 8 LED Lights (7 Watts each)
  • 2 Tube Lights (40 Watts each)
  • 3 Fans (70 Watts each)
  • 1 LED Television (70 Watts)
  • 1 Refrigerator (140 Watts)

Total Required Power = [(8*7)+(2*40)+(3*70)+(1*70)+(1*140)] = 556 Watts

Battery capacity = (556*2*1.25)/(12*0.8*0.8) = 181 Ah

Important Note – Since a battery’s capacity deteriorates with age, it is advisable to buy a battery with a battery capacity that’s 5-10% higher than the calculated battery capacity. For instance, in the above mentioned scenario a battery with a battery capacity of around 200 Ah is recommended.

2. Battery Technology

Inverter batteries can be divided into 2 main types based on battery technology – Flat Plate Batteries and Tubular Batteries.

Flat plate batteries – They are a type of lead-acid battery. They have a high charging rate, and therefore, suitable for homes located in areas that face frequent but short power cuts. The high charging rate helps ensure that the battery gets charged quickly between two subsequent power  cuts. However, flat batteries cannot hold much charge and are available in low battery capacities. They are, therefore, recommended for areas with short duration power cuts.

Flat plate batteries come with a shorter life span. So, if you are looking for an economical inverter battery and are okay with a shorter term warranty, you can go for a flat plate battery.

Tubular Battery – Tubular batteries, too, are a type of lead-acid battery. Since these batteries are big in size they can hold more charge and are available in high battery capacities. The only downside is that they consume a lot of storage space. But tubular batteries are ideal for areas that experience long power cuts.

Another advantage of buying a tubular battery is that they are easy to maintain. They require fewer water top-ups as compared to flat plate batteries. Last but not least, they come with a longer lifespan, and therefore, you can stay relaxed without having to worry about replacing them after a few years. However, all of this comes with a cost as tubular batteries are relatively costlier.

3. Battery Warranty

Usually, battery warranty is directly proportional to the price of the battery. In other words, more the battery warranty, more the cost of the battery. So, if you are sitting on a tight budget or need one for a couple of years you can go with a battery with shorter warranty periods. For instance, a flat plate battery. However, if cost is not a concern and peace of mind matters the most to you then you should buy a battery that comes with a longer warranty period.
