The client’s system specs will need to be clarified, and you’ll need to understand their workflow and industry. A consulting job will likely require you to travel to the business or organization you’re consulting with, and you may have to meet with various staff members.

Ultimately, depending on your role, you may need to determine their network, hardware, and software requirements and devise solutions or make recommendations to improve efficiency.

You might also be tasked to design, install, test, and monitor new technology systems for the client. You may also need to train users to use new computer systems, software, etc.

As a consultant for a B2B IT firm, you will act as a liaison between your company and the client. Depending on the consultancy firm you work with, you may be hired directly as an employee or work as a consultant or self-employed contractor.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not offer specific IT consulting salaries. Since IT consultancy is such a broad field, your salary will likely depend on the particular skill set you can provide and will correlate with the wages of traditional IT work.

For instance, IT database administrators earn an average salary of $98,860, while computer support specialists earn a median annual salary of $55,510. A quick search of available IT consultancy jobs on the internet shows that most positions across the board pay between $85,000 and $100,000 a year. However, IT management consultant positions pay between $125,000 and $175,000 per year.

Training and Requirements

The educational training or requirements for an IT consultancy position will depend on the specific role you take on. For any IT job, though, you will need to have a high degree of proficiency with information technology and computer systems. 

You may also need other training for some roles. For instance, if you are a project manager, PMP certification will benefit you. But formal education and training will give you an edge, particularly for work in some industries. An understanding of economics, logistics, and more will also give you a competitive advantage.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science or business is a valuable thing to have in your toolbelt when pursuing any IT consultancy job. Software engineering, information systems studies, mathematics courses, and other engineering courses are also helpful.
